Rin Tin Tin or Rinty is a German shepherd found in France during World War I and adopted by an American soldier named Lee Dunkin. His new life in Los Angeles had led to instant stardom when he caught the eye of filmmakers during a 12 feet high jump. Because of his athletic abilities, he has starred in nearly 30 films written specifically for him. 

Regrettably, his death devastated his owner, yet he remains forever remembered as Warner Bros studio's unofficial doggy mascot, successfully saving the company from bankruptcy. Additionally,

The Wizard of Oz is a famous movie starring Dorothy and her canine companion Toto, the terrier. Toto's real name was Terry, an adorable abandoned puppy. Fortunate for her, Carl Spitz, a dog trainer in Hollywood, adopted her. Furthermore, Toto has become one of the most beloved canine actresses of her generation, starring alongside some of the biggest celebrities. Even before the Wizard of Oz, she was pretty well-known on the screen. At the end of her career, She has cast in over 17 films and has lived to be 11 years old.

Lassie

Lassie the rough collie

This beautiful, rough collie was the most popular canine in the 40s and 50s. The funny thing was that Lassie's character is female, but the part is played by a male collie. The original Lassie is named Pal, and ever since he died in 1958, every Lassie role was given to pups in Pal's bloodline. This has become a very lucrative family business, and Pal has made twice as much as his co-star Elizabeth Taylor. List of Famous Dogs.

Bobbie

Bobbie is a Scotch Collie and English shepherd mix. The puppy belonged to the Braziers family and was lost during a family vacation to Walcott, Indiana. The Braziers had to return to Oregon despite leaving behind their beloved puppy. 

Six months later, Bobbie returns to his owner's front door. They speculated that Bobbie had traveled 2500 miles in the cold season winter to reunite with his family. In a matter of weeks, Bobbie's story became national news with people claiming that they have helped him through this journey by feeding him food and giving him water. 

He gained a lot of attention in 1924 that he even starred in a silent film. In 1927, Bobbie was buried in a pet cemetery run by the Oregon Humane Society. As of today, he is one of the most beloved dogs in history, and tourists would travel all over the world to visit this faithful pup's grave.

Trakr

Trakr, the German Shepherd, and his police handler James Symington have driven from Canada to New York to help locate survivors from the 9/11 attack. He and Symington are credited for discovering the last survivor, a woman trapped under steel and heavy concrete for over 24 hours. Additionally, Trakr has become the most famous dog in history. Time Magazine acknowledged him as one of the top 10 most heroic animals of all time. In 2009, BioArts International cloned Trakr, and Symington reunited with the clone, continuing to train the dog for search and rescue.

Nemo

Nemo, the German Shepherd, is a military canine during the Vietnam War. His job is to alert US soldiers of Viet Con intruders nearby. The dog would bark when he sees an attacker. Nemo and his handler have successfully killed two intruders but were severely injured. A bullet went through Nemo's eyes and exited through his nose. Despite his injuries, he risks his life, protecting his handler until the paramedics arrive. After Nemo retired from the military, he became a well-known war veteran. He died in 1972, and has received a proper burial with a tombstone that says "may all who hear the story of Nemo, know the true measure of man’s Best Friend."

Balto

In 1920, during a harsh winter, a town called Nome Alaska had a fatal case of diphtheria. There is no other form of transportation available, other than through dogsled. Balto, a Siberian husky, was known for leading a team of dogs to cross 500 miles to Anchorage Alaska to deliver serum back to Nome Alaska to save the community.

Lex

Lex, a German shepherd, assigned to Dustin Lee, a military soldier. Both of them were stationed in Iraq but were unfortunately injured during an attack. The loyal dog had to be forcibly dragged away from Dustin so that the paramedic could inspect him. Unfortunately, Dustin did not survive, and after his death, his family pleaded with the US Marine Corps to retire the bomb-sniffing canine soldier so that they can adopt him. After completing various paperwork, Lex became the first working military dog to retire early and was adopted by Dustin’s family.
