3 things to look for when shopping for CBD oil

Let's face it, shopping for CBD oil can be a daunting task. As the popularity of CBD becomes more widespread, there are increasingly more options for CBD oil on the market. The good news is that with this popularity comes an increase in available resources and therefore more quality products available to purchase.  The confusion only deepens with the variety of brands and products, each claiming to be the best.

Start with these 3 guidelines to understand what makes a quality CBD product and to help you navigate your next CBD purchase.

Look for companies who are transparent about their raw materials.

Ultimately, the safety and success of a product is directly linked to the active ingredient, CBD, and where it originated from. Make sure that the company you purchase products from is transparent about the origin and processing of their CBD. Look for CBD derived from quality hemp, preferably organic and therefore free of pesticides.

CBD derived from the hemp plant is naturally high in CBD and has little to no traces of THC. When shopping for CBD oil for your dog, be sure to look for THC-free products to ensure that your dog will not experience a high. You can verify CBD content by asking to view a 3rd party lab test, provided by the company who created the products.

Keep in mind that a high amount of THC can be detrimental to your canine companion. It can cause undesirable symptoms of:

  • Staggering
  • Difficulty walking
  • Rocking back and forth
  • Twitching
  • Wide-open eyes
  • Drooling
  • Tense muscles

Dope Dog uses one of the purest, most bioavailable CBD isolates on the market.  We only use non-GMO hemp grown without herbicides and pesticides. The CBD is extracted using proprietary hydrocarbon extraction processing that protects the molecule from being denatured, ensuring the highest possible bioactivity. Look for labels that support accurate dosing.

Once you have determined what type of product you're shopping for, the next step is to make sure it will be effective as you incorporate it into your pet's existing routine. A user-friendly product with clear labeling is the first place to start. Make sure the product lists the amount of active CBD contained inside each package. Furthermore, clear dosing instructions on the back of the package is also critical because this will help ensure you are dosing your pet properly.

The side effects of overdosing your dog with CBD are:

  • Vomiting
  • Drowsiness
  • Itching
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness

Typically, dosing will be based on the weight of your dog. For example, a starting dose is 1-3mg for every 10 lbs of body weight. So if your pet is 30lbs, you can start with a 3mg dose and increase up to 9mg as needed. The great thing about CBD is that it is an all natural, plant-derived supplement. It's effects are very mild and there is no risk of "overdosing" as one might worry about with more potent pharmaceuticals.

Once you learn what your dog's ideal dose is, you should be able to easily measure it based off the instructions on the package and with the tools provided. For example, the Dope Dropper comes with a graduated pipette which is labeled with markers for each 1/4 of a milliliter, allowing for extremely accurate dosing.

Look for a quality carrier oil.

Most CBD oils on the market are suspended in what is often called a "carrier oil". You want to make sure that the carrier oil of your CBD is helpful, not harmful. For example, in a Dope Dropper you will find only 2 ingredients: active CBD and a pet-appropriate carrier oil. It's obvious that the oils in this product were chosen thoughtfully because they are human-grade, biologically appropriate for dogs, and have other added benefits.

Unflavored Dope Dropper 500mg CBD Oil

The 500mg Unflavored Dope Dropper is made with MCT-coconut oil. MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides, which are easier to digest than long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) and might even have more benefits related to heart health, obesity prevention and brain health.

Salmon Dope Dropper 200mg CBD Oil

For a CBD oil that does double duty because of its all-star carrier oil, check out the Dope Dropper 200, containing 200mg of CBD suspended in wild Alaskan salmon oil. Fish oil, specifically wild salmon oil, is very high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 is important for our dogs' diet and can help support a number of health concerns before they start.

Ultimately, shopping for CBD oil can be a overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be! Stick with these 3 guidelines to ensure your next shopping experience is easy and successful.
