Breakthrough Anti-Aging Treatment: LOY-001, A New Hope for Extending Canine Lifespans
There's exciting news from a company in San Francisco called Loyal. They've made a big step forward with a new drug called LOY-001. This drug, which is given as a regular shot, could help our dogs live longer. In addition, It's not just great news for our pets, but it might also help us learn more about staying healthy as we get older.
Loyal was started with the big aim of creating the first medicines to increase the healthy life of dogs," explained Loyal's CEO, Celine Halioua. "This achievement comes after many years of dedicated efforts by our team. Also, We are committed to keep working hard to get approval from the FDA for this and our other long-life projects.
LOY-001 works by changing the levels of something called IGF-1 in big dogs. This makes their levels more like those in smaller dogs. Additionally, Scientists have found that when IGF-1 levels are lower, it can help animals live longer, healthier lives.
Good News from the FDA:
The FDA, which checks if drugs are safe and work well, thinks LOY-001 has promise. In fact, They're looking at the drug to see if it can be approved for use. This is especially good news for big dogs, who usually don't live as long as smaller dogs.
What This Means for Dogs:
If LOY-001 becomes available, it could change how we take care of our dogs as they get older. Furthermore, It's exciting to think that we might have a way to help our bigger furry friends live longer.
Everyone's watching Loyal to see what happens next with LOY-001. Plus, This drug isn't just important for dogs; it could also teach us a lot about aging in general. To sum up, It shows how caring for our pets can lead to bigger discoveries that help everyone.

My name is Andi Star and I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I absolutely adore dogs and all animals in general. That’s a given in my profession but really....I stop in my tracks if I see a pup anyyywhere!
]]>
It's National Pet Sitter Week and we're bringing you a day in the life of our favorite Los Angeles pet sitter, Andi Star. Here's an exclusive interview we had with Andi in which she shares her background, favorite part about pet sitting, and more!
DD: Quick intro/bio about you. Name? Where are you from?
AS: Hi everyone! My name is Andi Star and I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I absolutely adore dogs and all animals in general. That’s a given in my profession but really....I stop in my tracks if I see a pup anyyywhere!
DD: When did you begin pet sitting?
Andi Star: It really feels like forever ago. I started unofficially while in college 8 years ago(WOW)!!! Friends would need help with their pups and they knew I would jump up and down if they asked me to petsit. I moved back home for a year and continued it going with family and friends. I’ve been in LA for 3 years now and I absolutely love my clients. Both pups and parents alike!
DD: What prompted you to get into this business/why do you love it?
AS: I’ve always loved animals. It’s who I am. I volunteered at the Humane Society, taught at camps where kids learn everything about dogs, worked at a zoo for two summers, was an equestrian, and I even played Dog-opoly. Yes, It’s a thing!
People always appreciated when I would sit their pets and I was very ecstatic to do it! So why not do what I love, everyone wishes for that! It just made sense to me. It’s so meaningful to spend quality time with incredible dogs and knowing that their parents feel at peace when they leave because they will be in good hands makes it even better.
DD: What is your favorite part of your job?
AS: I have to name just one? There are so many but something that can’t be beat(if they are allowed by their parents in the bed) is waking up in the morning and seeing smiling, happy pups ready to start their day. Who doesn’t love puppy cuddles! Seeing how they behave in their own environment is adorable.
DD: Did you have any dogs growing up?
AS: I did! We are definitely an animal lover family. All furry friends haha It was the best to come home and have a best friend waiting for you. I was always inseparable from them. We had an Old English Sheepdog named Hannah that I used to rollerblade with, so much fun! I hope she thought so! My parents still have dogs in the house too. The fully deaf and going blind but still oh so sprite Fritz, and the incredibly loving and playful Sage.
DD: Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
AS: I’m also an actor! So storytelling is definitely a passion of mine. Stepping into another person’s shoes, watching stories unfold on TV/Film/Stage, and collaborating is truly magical.
DD: What advice would you give someone thinking about pet sitting or someone just getting started?
AS: It’s really important to know that not one dog is alike. Just like people their behaviors, temperaments, and little quirks are different. On the flip side that goes for their owners, or parents as I like to call them, as well. You have to approach each client with a fresh set of eyes and really listen to what they need. Communication is key. Then just have fun!!!! It’s such a blast.
DD: Are you taking on new clients? If so, how can someone contact you?
AS: I am definitely taking on new clients. I’d love to meet your pup! You can contact me through email at andistar36@gmail.com. I’d love to meet your pup! I also take care of cats so if you have a kitty as well that’s great too!
AS: I know this past year has been hard on so many of us. I’m so grateful our dogs are by our sides. They are a true gift to this world. For me, they are the driving force that’s kept going!

ABOUT DEITY
Deity Animal Rescue is a non-profit rescue organization founded by Ellen Ballon Dante. After relocating to Los Angeles from Pittsburg in 2000, Ellen volunteered, and rescued dogs to find them homes. In 2007, Ellen launched Deity Jewels, a jewelry line donating 20% of proceeds to the now named Deity Animal Rescue.
The intention behind Deity was to take rescue efforts to the next level, and that it did. In just the first year of service, Deity Animal Rescue has helped over one hundred dogs just like Rafa, dogs that are in urgent need of rescue from high kill city and county shelters.
"No animal is more deserving than another and I would save them all if I could." - Ellen, Founder and CEO
Deity's current mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and place stray, neglected and shelter dogs into loving, responsible and committed homes. They do not discriminate on age, breed or ease of placement. Rather, they choose dogs based on temperament and potential to be wonderful companions. They also adhere to a comprehensive adoption process which includes finding the best possible match for each dog and performing home checks.
In addition, the team educates and empowers people of all ages as to how they can make a difference in the lives of animals in their communities. They highlight the importance of pet sterilization, animal welfare, and why it is a good idea to adopt from a shelter or rescue rather than buy from a breeder.
Deity's COO and Lead Rescuer, Lindsay Bird, joined Ellen in her efforts when a major health scare made her reevaluate life and the gift of health and happiness. Dogs served a key roll in her recovery and she strives to share the healing power of dogs with others. Dogs saved her so it’s only right that she save dogs.
"Firstly, I do this work to speak for them since they cannot speak for themselves, and stand for them when they need an ally." - Lindsay, COO and Lead Rescuer
Together Ellen and Lindsay created a jewelry line to help fund the rescue. At Deity Jewels, we donate 100% of the proceeds to the rescue to aid animals in need. Then, The hope is that people around the world will contribute to their efforts by joining the tribe wearing jewels and saving a life.
GET INVOLVED
Firstly, Deity relies on our supporters and fosters to continue do what they do. Then, Dope Dog encourages Los Angeles animal lovers to get involved by adopting, fostering, volunteering, or donating. Furthermore, Contact Deity for more information about available animals or how to get involved.

A Bunny Trapped in a Dog's Body. Today we interviewed Dope Dog Norman's mom, Nicole and learned that Norman would rather hop like a bunny rather than run! Also, This clever spunky ball of fur was the star of the show as we got into some of his favorite things, one of which is salmon flavored CBD. Lastly, You will definitely find some laughs in this one (Nicole officially has a dope sense of humor) so read on and enjoy!
DD: What do you do for work and what led you to this profession?
Nicole: I'm a lawyer. I love research and writing and oral argument!
DD: How would friends describe you?
Nicole: Outgoing, active, family-oriented, and Norman-obsessed.
DD: When did you decide you needed a dog?
Nicole: I've been surrounded by dogs since childhood. When our family's golden retriever aged and I returned to LA, I decided to introduce young energy. Lastly, Welcome Norman!
DD: Who is your Dope Dog? (name, sex, breed)
Nicole: Norman, M, Goldendoodle
DD: How do you guys spend time together?
Nicole: We go hiking, cuddle on the couch, and go to the park. Norman goes nuts for real grass so I try to find open grassy spots in LA for him.
DD: If Norman weren’t a dog, how would she/he spend their time?
Nicole: I often jest that Norman is a dog with a bunny's spirit, as he hops around instead of running! If he weren't a dog, he would probably be a spoiled BH housewife that hangs by the pool all day and sips pina coladas.
DD: Who gets spoiled more, you or Norman?
Nicole: This one is easy -- Norman.
DD: What does Norman use CBD for?
Nicole: Norman despises groomer visits, becoming extremely stressed during his time there. Also, He eats a couple CBD treats before his appointments and he is much more relaxed.

Hey Dope Dogs! My name is Erin, and I'm the cofounder of Dope Dog. We are excited to be starting our Ask The Trainer Q+A series with Sylvia Wes. Sylvia is a certified positive reinforcement trainer based in Los Angeles. She's amazing with animals and an amazing person. We are so lucky to have her available to answer any questions our Dope Dogs have about dog training. Today we are sharing our most recent Q+A session with Sylvia.
Erin: Welcome Sylvia! Thank you for being here to answer real questions from real Dope Dogs!
Sylvia: Hi Everyone! Hope you're all doing well. My name is Sylvia Wes, as I was so lovely introduced. I love Dope Dog treats and my dogs are all Dope Dogs. Presently, I'm the head trainer at Up Dog LA. I also work as a partner trainer for Fit Dog Clubs and for Pet Food Express. I have been training for a lot of years in the Los Angeles area and I absolutely love my job. We know a lot of people are getting new dogs right now because of this quarantine, so I'm really happy to be able to bring you guys some training information.
Erin: And on that note, our first question is related to quarantine.
Q: What are the top three things that someone bringing home a new puppy needs to know?
Sylvia: So here is the magic recipe.
The first and foremost thing that you need to have for your dog is routine and schedule. So that's number one, which honestly, we all need right now. So if you have a new dog, use it to your advantage to help create a routine for the two of you. Routine is very important.
Secondly, mental stimulation. You need to challenge your dogs mentally. I know a lot of our parks and hiking trails are shut down, but that's okay. Your new dog or puppy needs more than a hike. They really need brain stimulation.
And then thirdly, get a crate and make them learn how to be alone. This is especially important now because when this quarantine is over and we go back to our real lives, whether we're in an office or maybe we're still working from home, or we plan on having a dinner date again with our significant other or friend we are going to need to leave our dogs alone and when that happens, what's going to happen to our dogs? We want to make sure that we're not implementing separation anxiety now.
Syliva: So to recap, the 3 things are routine, mental stimulation, and alone time. Those are the building blocks for all the dope dogs out there that are bringing home first time puppies. Make sure you get those into place.
Erin: Our next question is also related to our new situation.
Q: What activities can my dog and I do since we can't go to the park or beaches which are all closed?
Sylvia: So much stuff! First of all, training is a big one. We're all home. We have a little bit of extra time. Train your dogs and I mean teach them everything from your basics to sit and down to some cool tricks. My dog Hunter and I are currently working on play, dead and rollover. Last week we learned rebound, which is like a flip trick. Really take some time to train your dogs. That's a part of that mental stimulation that I'm talking about.
If you want a great tip, I personally use and train on the Dogo App, which you can find online, it's free. You can also subscribe to their premium, but what I really love about it is the fact that you videotape yourself training your dog and doing the trick. Then you get feedback from a real trainer like myself who will watch that video and tell you whether or not you're doing well, or if your timing is wrong. So it's a really great way to train your dog in house with some of those tricks like crawl, name recognition, recall, etc. You can practice all the tricks that you really need to know and even the tricks that you don't need to know, because those extra tricks can be really cool to show off and can make your dog look awesome.
The other thing I would recommend to you is just playing games with your dog. On my Instagram page, I have an entire series of DIY games that you can build just out of like stuff in your house that you can play with your dog.
So one of my favorites right now is a DIY game that we call a cover board game. Cover games are just as they sound, you're literally going to take treats and cover them with things. A cover board game is literally creating a board game for your dog. The easiest cover board game is to just get a cupcake tin, fill it with your dog's favorite snacks or even their meal, and then cover that with anything that fits in those cupcake tin holes like tennis balls, cups, or your dog's favorite toy. Just cover up all the treats and then hold on to that tin while they're searching so it doesn't slide around. Puzzles are a great way to not only stimulate your dog's brain but also to build their confidence, which is so important.
The whole video is up on my IgE TV if you want to really know how to do it and also how to make it harder, because once your dog gets really good at it, you have to be able to challenge them a little bit.
Q: How can I encourage my Husky not to stop mid walk and refuse to move?
Sylvia: Okay, so here's the issue with this question. As a professional trainer, I can't offer you specific advice on this particular case just because I don't know why the dog is stopping. I would encourage this dope dog to do is figure out what's going on with the Husky.
Are they stopping because they're afraid? Because sometimes it can feel like our dogs are just stopping and refusing to go anywhere, but there might be something going on with our dog that we're not picking up on. It could be fear related. It could be just a protest, but there could be any number of things going on.
So to offer a treatment plan, we really have to get to the bottom of why this behavior is happening. Are they uncomfortable outside? Did a plastic bag blow by and they're like totally freaked out? Did they maybe hear something that you didn't pick up on because their ears are better than ours? Whatever it might be, could be leaning to why the dog is not not continuing to walk. And if they are just stopping for the sake of stopping, there's a reason behind that too. I always like to remind everybody that a great walk starts inside your house. If you want a great walk outside, build a better release relationship with your leash and your dog inside the house. Building important relationships with doorways, entrances, and exits is also super important.
Erin: Our next question is about clicker training.
Q: My friend uses a clicker to help with puppy training. Can you elaborate on how this works?
Sylvia: Yeah, absolutely. So clickers all come down to basic foundations of positive reinforcement training. When you're training your dog, there's really only two important sounds that your dog needs to hear. One is your marker sound, which in this user's friends case, they're using the clicker. The other most important sound should be your release cue and your release tells your dog, I'm finished working with you. Notice that nowhere in there did I say one of the most important words is the actual keyword word itself.
So a lot of times we get really hung up on like telling our dogs to sit down, shake and using these really complex languages that guess what our dogs don't know what those words mean. Additionally, the most important thing you can do is build association to these two important things. So what your friend is doing is using a click to mark a dog's correct behavior. The sound that clicker can also very easily be replaced by a simple “yes” or good. You want to make it short, sweet and simple. You don't get into “good dog” or “Oh my gosh, you're such a good boy”, because that's not a marker. That's a reward. The important thing to note is that your marker word is actually your bridge between the desired behavior you're looking for and your dog getting their food reward.
So if I'm using a clicker, I would want to click the second my dog's tushy hits the floor. Ask yourself, “What behavior am I marking and capturing, and what are they going to get rewarded for?” Putting their butt on the ground? Really simple. If you don't have a clicker at home, that's okay. I like to use the word yes.
So when I'm working with my dog, Hunter or the puppy, you'll hear me saying yes, yes, yes. A lot. And I try to make it sound the same as much as I can.
Just remember timing is everything. So click orr yes, to capture the behavior you're trying to get is more important than the food reward itself because that sound lets your dog know, Bingo! You've just done exactly what I'm looking for and here comes your food for it. I did what I was supposed to do..
Syliva: I have a couple, but I'll give you my favorite because I'm puppy training right now. You can make your dog a Puppy Popsicle. They love these because they're teething and their mouths hurt because their teeth are coming in so a nice frozen treat feels so good, puts the gums to sleep, and makes them very happy.
For a very simple puppy Popsicle, you're going to need a blender, some peanut butter. Blueberries or bananas, your call, and a little bit of parsley. Now the parsley, believe it or not, is a natural breath freshener. So just pop a little parsley in there, but don't go overboard cause then it'll taste weird and your puppy will be like, what is this? But if you just a little bit in there, it will help to naturally freshen their breath. So you just toss everything into a blender: a tablespoon of peanut butter, a handful of blueberries, and then just add water until it's kind of liquified. Then just stick like a little piece of parsley leaf on the top of each Popsicle. Pop that in the freezer till it's frozen and then boom, you have fruity, peanut buttery, delicious popsicles.
Erin: Okay, this Dope Dog has another dog walking question.
Q: My dog used to be fine walking off leash, however, she started this habit of running up to other dogs to the point where I can't have her off-leash anymore. Why might this be?
Sylvia: This is an off-leash question, so that's a whole other thing. So typically when something like this happens and we have what feels like kind of like a regression. What really happened is your dog accidentally got reinforced for doing the wrong behavior. Right? So remember, reinforcement drives behavior. I'll say that again, reinforcement drives behavior. So the more you reinforce something, the higher the likelihood that behavior is to reoccur. That's the whole basis of positive reinforcement training.
If we're talking about a dog who's off leash, the dog is thinking “I'm having a great time hitting this trail with my mom. Ooh, look, a dog! I run over. Say hi to that dog. I just had a party. I got to sniff butts.” Technically as the dog, I just got reinforced for running up to another dog, right? So the best thing to do would start with, would be to start with reinforcing, obviously not running up to another dog.
So before you can take this off leash, you'll want to do it on leash and just work with some treats. Go to your usual hiking trailer park and start from scratch. Go on leash, get your dog walking. When you see another dog coming, just reward your dog. Before they can get going towards the other dog. If they pull or move towards that other dog, don't reward.
Now your dog is actually being reinforced for the correct behavior, which is seeing another dog and doing nothing. Seeing another dog and doing nothing and what's happening when they do nothing. They're eating something yummy like cheese or whatever you have left over in your fridge. Really, I mean, Turkey, lunch, meat, whatever you have, bring it with you and your dog is going to be like, I don't even care about this other dog because mom has drinks and treats.
A fun trick that I like to do when I'm training off leash is I'll make the click sound on the leash as though I have unclipped them, but I don't actually unclip. So the dog goes to take off and guess what? They're still leashed. So those small sounds and noises actually cue your dog to let them know that the environment has changed. So if you can sensitize those different parts, then your dog never really knows what's going on, and then they'll actually learn to release and move away from you when you say, okay.
You can think about your dog's behavior in just two camps, one is a rewardable camp and one is a non rewardable camp. It's all about just feeding this behavior and not feeding this one. It's that simple, right?
Q: My dog sometimes pees in my bed, right where I sleep. Is something wrong or is the internet right that she just loves me?
Sylvia: Oh, no. Okay. Couple of things here. First of all, if your dog is marking in the same area, whether it's like this dope dogger’s bed or your couch or your favorite rug, the thing to keep in mind is your dog's nose functions at such a higher level than ours ever will. So even though you might think that the area is clean and doesn't smell like urine, there's actually still urine. In the fibers and your dog can smell that. And so in their mind, it's a bathroom.
The problem with beds and couches is they're highly absorbent for your dog. So I want you to think of your bed as the most absorbent, biggest pee pad your dog has ever seen. And the great thing about peeing on your bed is it soaks into your mattress, which is good news for your dog, because now they don't have to sleep in their own excrement because it gets sponged in. So that's why, when we're crate training our dogs if they're having accidents in the crate, it means that what we have in the crate is too swishy because they can pee in one corner it gets soaked up, and they're like, “Perfect!” that cleaned itself up. So that might be what's going on.
I also highly encourage investing in a really good enzymatic urine cleaner. You need something that's going to have enzymes in it that are going to eat the urine that's in the fibers of your mattress.
I might also recommend a waterproof cover for your mattress, you can pick one up at target or Amazon so if this happens again, it won't seep into your mattress because I think the problem we're having now is it just smells like pee and your dog is confusing it for a bathroom.
The next most important thing, which is the first most important thing if you just got a new dog is schedule, schedule, schedule if your dog is not going to the bathroom predictably. That means that somewhere there's an issue with potty training and scheduling. Remove access to your bedroom so your dog can't get in there anymore and put your dog on a very defined schedule so that they know when it's potty time and when it's nap time.
Take Home Message
I'll give you a breakdown of the schedule I'm using for my puppy just as a for instance. I have my puppy on a 2 on 2 off schedule. Two on means two hours in the crate. Two off means two hours of free play time free play time doesn't mean running around the house, but it does mean you get monitored by me.
I might tie my puppy to the couch if I'm in the living room or umbilical cord my puppy, which means I put him on a leash and tie it to my pants and he goes everywhere I go for two hours and then after two hours we take a potty break and he goes back in his crate for two more hours. So that's just a really simple schedule, but it helps the puppy understand when he's awake that he shouldn't be partying and that when he has his outside time is when he should be pottying.
It helps to give your dog a little bit of predictability so they know when they get to go potty so that they don't feel like, Oh, I better go potty. Now because I don't know when I'm going to get to go out again. And this smells like a bathroom and I've used it as a bathroom before. So this must be a bathroom, right?
The last ingredient is pay for outdoor pees. So if your dog does pee outside, give them a paycheck. Reinforcement drives behavior. If I'm getting turkey for peeing outside and nothing for peeing on the bed, I'm probably going to opt to pee outside so I can eat turkey. To recap, remove access, better schedule, and pay for pees!

12 Days Of Giving
Dope Dog's 12 Days Of Giving 2022 - December is our favorite time of year here at Dope Dog. Aside from seasonal joys, like pumpkin spice lattes and holiday parties, we give back through the 12 Days of Giving 2022 campaign. Every year, we ask all our Dope Dog's to share their favorite animal rescue and why it is special to them.
Firstly, Starting December 1st, we select a rescue each day for 12 days to feature and send a donation. This year, we are donating a case of our Pumpkin Tumeric CBD Belly Bites to each rescue in honor of the person who submitted them. Then, These treats will help calm and relax the rescue dogs waiting for homes this holiday season. Also, 12 Days of Giving also helps feature specific dogs who are available for adoption now. Did any one ask Santa for a puppy this year?!
Furthermore, below is list of the 12 rescues who we have donated to in the last 12 days. Thank you to all our Dope Dogs who shared their special stories, and thank to to all the rescues out there doing amazing work!
BADRAP was formed in 1999 to tackle the difficult issues that had been bringing suffering and early death to San Francisco bay area pit bull type dogs. Moreover, we evolved into a nationally recognized resource, providing adopters with desirable pets, dog training classes, and expert consultations.
Once again, Austin Bulldog Rescue (ABR) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, breed specific, English Bulldog Rescue Organization in Austin, TX. We operate as a volunteer-based organization, depending on tax-deductible donations to cover essential medical care for our rescued bulldogs. Dope Dog's 12 Days Of Giving 2022.
ABR is committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing unwanted English Bulldogs. They educate owners on responsible ownership and inform the public about the breed.
Firstly, Paws of L.A. aims to rescue abandoned and neglected dogs from shelters, providing them permanent homes through adoption. Also, we promote animal care education and emphasize spaying and neutering.
In OTHER words...
We love dogs! Who doesn't? The animal shelters are filling up fast in Los Angeles. We started a charity to mend their hearts and health. Also, We place them in the RIGHT homes. We educate the community. AAAND Repeat.
Can you imagine an America where no pet is killed in a shelter again simply for being unwanted? We can. Led by Best Friends Animal Society, the NKLA initiative is poised to serve as a model for how the entire nation can become no-kill, with no pet ever having to die in a shelter again simply because they do not have a home.
When Best Friends launched the No-Kill Los Angeles (NKLA) initiative in 2012, only 56% of the dogs and cats in the city’s shelters were making it out alive. But thanks to the hard work of so many, including the entire NKLA Coalition, Mayor Garcetti, Los Angeles Animal Services, our fabulous local community and devoted volunteers, we are thrilled to announce a sustained save rate of 90.49% for 2020.
Join us. Together, we can Save Them All®.
The NKLA Pet Adoption Center is now open Friday - Sunday from 12PM - 4PM.
Muttville Senior Dog Rescue is a cage free facility in San Francisco, CA dedicated to saving dogs 7 years & older. We rescue them, give them the care they need, find them loving homes, and spread the word about how WONDERFUL they are! See less
Muttville is celebrating 13 years and 9,000+ senior dogs saved!
We reach out to senior and special needs rescue dogs; find homes for those dogs that are adoptable; and offer end of life care for those that are not. If we had our way, no dog would spend its last days in a shelter. There is so much love and joy in these dogs!
A PURPOSEFUL RESCUE IS A 501C3 NON-PROFIT THAT SAVES DOGS FROM HIGH-KILL LOS ANGELES AREA SHELTERS.
There are many amazing dogs who get overlooked, or need a little extra work or care, and we aim to give those dogs a second chance. We strongly believe that we will not adopt our way out of the problem of pet overpopulation, which is why we focus heavily on prevention and community outreach. Primarily focused on South Central Los Angeles, we promote spay and neuter and education. We rely on the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. Dope Dog's 12 Days Of Giving 2022.
Bideawee's mission is to create and strengthen the human-animal bond through best-in-class lifesaving and compassionate care for pets and the people who love them
From our founding, more than 117 years ago, as one of our country’s first no-kill animal welfare organizations, Bideawee has been a leader in rescuing dogs and cats and successfully integrating them into loving homes. We do this by providing the highest quality shelter experience, medical care, socialization and adoption services within a disciplined and sustainable financial structure.
We are a compassionate team of dedicated staff, board members and volunteers, and our work demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the well-being of animals and their people in our community.
Wags & Walks was founded in 2011 by Lesley Brog, the daughter of a veterinarian, who was devastated by the number of sweet and healthy dogs being euthanized due to overcrowding in LA shelters. Their main goal when founded was to break the stigma that rescue dogs are damaged goods and to help decrease the number of dogs euthanized in local shelters by showing the community that you can find wonderful dogs of all breeds and sizes through rescue. That value has remained consistent as the rescue has continued to grow.
One Tail at a Time
End pet homelessness by making pet ownership a joyful and accessible experience for all. We accomplish this by rescuing animals from overcrowded shelters, placing them in loving forever homes and providing support and resources to pet owners in need.
s of 2019 One Tail at a Time hosts a bustling dog adoption program at the Adoption Center, an ISO Program focusing on Chicago’s dogs, a Kitten Team that cares for neonate kittens, vaccine clinics in low income neighborhoods, and leads the Chicagoland Rescue Intervention & Support Program (“CRISP”) which keeps pets intending to be surrendered at the city shelter with their loving families.
Our story hasn't necessarily been for the faint of heart. Austin Pets Alive! began when vulnerable, homeless pets truly needed us the most.
When we were first imagined, Austin had a kill-rate of 87% – today, we have a save-rate of 97%. Through hardships, we have found inspiration; and through this inspiration, we have saved lives. Learn more about our journey to becoming - and maintaining our status as – the largest No Kill city in the country.
The Barking Lot is a 501c3 non-profit dog rescue organization in San Diego dedicated to dog adoption and finding foster homes for dogs in need.
We're passionate. We're non-profit. And we're volunteer-run.
Since 2010, we've rescued over 5,000 dogs, finding happy homes for abandoned dogs scheduled for euthanasia at other shelters.
In November 2016, we started our partnership with Soi Dog Foundation based in Thailand. We've rescued and flown in one group of dogs per month since, all survivors of the illegal dog meat trade.

After years in a stressful NYC job, my solace was always dog-related, from volunteering to my own pup. Dogs are my joy.
My dog got me through many difficult times in my life they have always been a comfort and the bond you develop is unbelievable. I was always intrigued to learn more about them and took a leap quit my corporate job and jumped head first into learning everything I could about the pet industry. Furthermore, I worked at a veterinarian clinic for a few years and studied pet design and marketing in NYC before I opened the boutique.
I thoroughly enjoy learning about animals and helping them is my passion. I enjoy being able to help customers and be apart of enhancing the bonds they have with their dogs. Dogs give us so much, so to be able to have a place people can bring their dogs to make them feel special is amazing!

In celebration of National Women's Day we are sharing this interview with Dope Dog's very own founder, Erin Mastopietro. This interview can also be found on the #FemaleFounders series hosted by the UK-based J+R Agency.
1. Why did you start your business? What spurred you on?
Since a young age I was always experimenting with small businesses, some more embarrassing than others. But to be completely honest, it wasn't until the corporate company I worked for closed it's doors and left me jobless that was I actually able to seize the opportunity to go all in on my own business full time.
2. What are the unique challenges you have faced as a female founder?
I've been lucky enough to surround myself with amazingly supportive communities and people. Because of dialogues like this - I feel more supported than ever being a woman founder.
3. What were the 3 steepest learning curves during your first year in business?
With a background in sales and retail, about half of what I've come across in this first year of business has been second nature to me. The other half has been more of a challenge. My learning curves have been: 1) The need for constant self promotion 2) The need for fearlessness when trying new things and failing, and 3) Navigating the backend of a successful e-commerce site. Luckily, my partner excels at these things so we make a good team.
4. What is your favorite thing about founding your own company?
The opportunity to share what I've created to help and inspire others. I am lucky that I get to connect with so many pet owners daily - not to mention the major bonus of meeting endless adorable dogs. =)
5. What is the best business advice you have been given by someone else?
One size doesn't fit all. As a new business owner, I'm constantly consuming information. Whether reading a new business book or connecting with fellow entrepreneurs, it can be valuable to hear others' trials and tribulations. However, I need to remind myself that each business is unique and even the best advice might not apply to exactly where my business is at that moment.
6. Do you ever suffer with imposter's syndrome? If so, what do you do to tackle it and move forward?
Absolutely. I think this is natural, regardless of what industry you're in. There something about having such a large stake in a business that you can't help but question things and wonder what the next guy is up to. I stay focused by keeping in tune with my customers, what they're loving and what they're asking for. This keeps me moving in the right direction, authentically. National Women's Day.
7. What's the best book on business you've read?
My business book of choice this year has been "Making Money is Killing Your Business" by Chuck Blakeman. It introduces savvy ways to view your business and provides actionable items that I have used to propelled my company in the right direction. I'd say it's a must read!
8. Tell us about another brilliant business woman you think our readers should know about.
One of my all time favorite idols is Sheryl Sandberg. Not only is she kicking butt as an executive but she's in the business of helping other women realized their full potential and ask for what they deserve. If you have not read her book "Lean In" or visit leanin.org, get on it!
9. What piece of advice would you give yourself if you were starting your business now?
Just start! I would remind myself that nothing happens unless you DO, so stop wondering and planning and just throw something out into the universe. Only then will progress happen. National Women's Day.

What inspired you get into the pet business?
Firstly, I was ready to leave my career in the fashion industry and saw a niche that was waiting to be filled 15 years ago. Then, I wanted to create an atmosphere for pets and their owners that had all the elements of a special shopping environment. Furthermore, Focusing on our own brand made here in the US and in Canada, we wanted to also offer other vendor assortments that were complimentary to merchandise well with our Zoomies products.
I love merchandising and visually, I wanted our customers to feel and touch everything at all different levels like you do in an Anthropologie store.Furthermore, As well as have the store smell amazing (we have a signature Fig candle that burns daily and we headquarter that line of French candles). Lastly, As Angelique’s background is in the restaurant industry, we knew we needed to create the 1st Biscuit Bar for Dogs in NYC. And most important, fabulous music to complete the shopping experience. Voila…. Zoomies was born and Chouchou became famous!
What's the one piece of advice you would give a fellow business owner?
Consistent outstanding customer service is a must.

But boy oh boy, does Downtown LA prove those theories wrong. There is such a powerful sense of community here and it is beautiful. All of my customers are genuine, kind, and 110% badass. My customers are also very diverse because we are located in the middle of THE melting pot, which creates a very unique and open atmosphere at Pet Project LA. There is truly a sense of connectedness between each other even if you have never officially met someone and only seen him/her in passing. Everyone ALWAYS has each other’s back and is offering to help one another out. It’s amazing."
Your pets should be shopping HERE! We are SUPER excited to spotlight Pet Project LA this week. We love making excuses to go downtown to visit out friends at Pet Project because it is always a good time. Rachel, the store owner, is an absolute delight so be sure to say hello next time you're in the neighborhood!
In the interview below, Rachel gives our readers a sneak peek inside what makes this the most badass pet store in Los Angeles.
What makes the pets/customers in your city unique? Before moving to LA, I would always hear things like “living in a big city, you never get to know anyone” or “it’s so hard to make friends in the city”. It’s amazing.
What is your go-to play list for the store music? At the moment, playlists based off of the following artists: Hall & Oates, Prince, and The Internet.
What products/trends have your customers been really into lately?
CBD (duh)! It’s really great that the research on CBD is expanding further and further into the pet/animal world. The benefits of CBD for humans and animals seem to be endless. From reducing inflammation, to increasing appetite, to managing anxiety, there really isn’t an animal that wouldn’t benefit from using supplements such as Dope Dog’s products. My customers also really like the local products I carry in my store. I am constantly trying to find the next local vendor to contact. All of our local peeps are truly one-of-a- kind, amazing folks and I am so happy to say I have their products in my store. You can tell just by looking at the products that these people really take the time and put love into what they’re making for your best friends to wear or use. As a dog mom, it makes me have a really good feeling in my tummy.
Do you have any pets? Yes! I have a handsome pit bull named Shakespeare. He is my baby and I love him with all my heart. He has a new brother (my boyfriend’s dog) named Angus and he is also so cute and sweet! They are quickly becoming best buds.
(Shakespeare, the model)
Why should Dope Dogs shop at Pet Project?
Dope Dogs should shop at Pet Project LA because we only carry products that we would use with our own fur babies. In other words, there is no BS here at Pet Project LA. We are real. And I think because of that we’re pretty dope, so it would just make sense if more dope animals of all kinds (and their human companions) shopped here. =)
